A group of guys somewhere in Africa holds up a board with a name, shouts "Happy birthday!" and breaks into a dance. If you've spent any time on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, you've probably seen one of these videos, and maybe wondered who they are. Here's the short version.
Quick answer: There isn't just one group. The "African guys" in birthday videos are dance crews in different African countries who film personalized greetings to order. Customers send a name, a message and often a photo, and the crew performs it on camera. We're one of these crews: African Crew Greetings, with our crew in Nigeria.
1. Who are the crews?
The videos come from many different teams across Africa. Each crew has its own style: some dance in matching outfits, some bring props like cakes, hearts and balloons, some even play live music. What they share is the format: a name on a board, a shout-out and a lot of energy.
Crews like ours have been filming these greetings for several years, and new teams keep joining as the videos travel around the world.
2. Why the videos went viral
- The surprise: people don't expect a crew on another continent to know their name.
- The energy: big smiles and dancing are contagious, even through a phone screen.
- The reactions: people film themselves watching their video, and those reaction clips get shared again and again.
- It works for everyone: birthdays, love messages, retirements, bachelor parties and "get well soon" wishes.
